The Master and Divino – Brazil, Feature, 85 minutes • Portuguese, Xavante with English Subtitles

Two filmmakers portray life in the village and in the mission of Sangradouro in Brazil’s Mato Grosso state. Adalbert Heide, an eccentric German missionary – around 1957 after this Xavante group sought the mission’s protection from their decimation – started to film with his Super 8 camera. Divino Tserewahú, a Xavante filmmaker, has produced documentaries on his people and the revival of their rituals since the 1900s. Shifting between appreciation and rivalry, irony and affection, the two give life to their visual records and provide a look at the complex interactions between indigenous people and the missionaries who have assigned themselves a life-long relationship to them.

Produced by Video nas Aldeias/Video in the Villages

Director: Tiago Campos Torres
