Whole Rod Juncus Baskets
Whole rod juncus basket making uses a simple technique to create utilitarian baskets. Renowned basket weaver Abe Sanchez (Purepecha) will teach students the basic principles of weaving and how to construct their own whole rod basket. Class fee includes materials.

Baskets and Books with Pauline Murillo
Pauline Murillo (San Manuel), author and basket collector, will be at the Museum for three days only. She will show and talk about her basket collection with visitors. Baskets made by her grandmother are special pieces she will share. She is the author of Living in Two Worlds and We Are Still Here Alive and in Spirit which relate her experiences growing up on the reservation with insight and humor.

Spirit Keepers Lecture

Kennewick Man on Trial
In July of 1996, skeletal remains were unearthed from the shore of the Columbia River in Kennewick, Washington. The skeleton was carbon dated between 5,650 and 9,510 years old. Important legal, ethical, and scientific issues were raised by the discovery. This lecture will present a variety of points of view on these issues, including federal law and the care of Native American human remains, how people first came to the Americas, and changing ideas about race. The lecture supplements the exhibition Kennewick Man on Trial currently on display at the Museum.

Journeys to the Past
Jacque Nunez (Acjachemen descendant) will whisk you away to the past through the power of storytelling and song. Participants recreate Native American stories, learn authentic California Indian songs, play games, and make their own musical instrument. Family participation is welcome.

Rabbit Skin Blankets
Lorene Sisquoc (Cahuilla/Fort Sill Apache) Curator of the Sherman Indian Museum in Riverside, leads an introductory course on making a rabbit skin blanket. The use of traditional cloth and bedding materials will also be discussed. Class fee includes materials.

From entertainment and dispute resolution to the gain and loss of personal property, games of chance have always played a vital role in cultures of the world. Join us for this rare opportunity to learn about the traditional Cahuilla game of chance called peon. Renowned southern California bird singer Michael Mirelez (Desert Cahuilla) and company will explain game pieces, calls, strategies, and related songs of this ancient game.

Singing the Birds (Wikitmallem Tahmuwhae): Bird Song and Dance Festival
Celebrate traditional bird singing and dancing. Through the ages, bird singing and dancing have been an important part of Native culture for tribes in southern California and other regions of the Southwest. This day-long event features honored bird singing groups and dancers from California and neighboring states.

Join us as Director of Education O’Jay Vanegas leads a bicycle tour of historic tribal landmarks in downtown Palm Springs and portions of the one square-mile area known as Section 14. Meet at the Museum. Participants must provide their own bicycles and safety gear. Registration required.

Section 14 - Heart of the Reservation
The City of Palm Springs is uniquely situated on the Agua Caliente Indian Reservation. In the heart of the reservation and the City is a one square-mile piece of land called Section 14. This section of land has a history filled with childhood memories, successful business and private development, and major local government controversy. Join us as a diverse panel of community members presents the many stories and facts associated with Section 14.

Cahuilla Pottery
The skill of pottery making was important to the Cahuilla people and to other Native Americans. Tony Soares (Choctaw/Seminole descendant) will teach basic techniques used to create pots for storing water and food. He will also share his knowledge of clay deposits, clay processing, and firing. Class fee includes materials.

Now in its ninth season, the Festival of Native Film & Culture is one of the nation’s most highly regarded festivals of its kind – featuring the best in films by, about, and starring Native Americans and other indigenous people. The Festival includes feature films, documentaries, and short films.

Color in the Canyons
A vibrant palette of colors and an array of flora come alive each spring in the Indian Canyons. Director of Education O’Jay Vanegas teaches the basics of watercolor art and interprets the history of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians in beautiful Andreas Canyon. This class is an introductory coursec with participation limited to 15 students. Materials are not included in the class fee, but students may purchase a material kit from the Museum. Participants will meet at the Museum and caravan to Andreas Canyon.

Spirit Keepers Lecture

What's the Score? American Indians in Sports
Coinciding with the March 24 opening of the exhibition by the same name, this lecture presents little-known stories of traditional Native American sports – the athletes and their feats in such sports as shinny, lacrosse, footracing, archery, swimming, hoop and pole, and various types of football. Local Indian reservation teams and individual sports heroes will be discussed, including Cahuilla baseball player Jack Tortes Meyers.

Presenter Joseph B. Oxendine, Ph.D. (Lumbee) is Chancellor Emeritus of the University of North Carolina - Pembroke and the author of American Indian Sports Heritage. He has written extensively on sports psychology.

Curator's Tour: Exploring Rock Art
One of the finest examples of rock art in the Colorado Desert is the petroglyph site at Corn Springs, approximately 90 minutes east of Palm Springs. Join Ginger Ridgway, Curator/Director of Programs, at the Corn Springs Campground for a bring-your-own picnic lunch, and visit several close-by panels of petroglyphs and grinding features. The walk is rated “easy,” with some spots slightly more difficult to reach. Additional information will be provided upon registration. Space is limited; registration is required. Participants are responsible for their own travel to the site

Southern California Indian Storytelling Festival
California Indian storytellers recount tales based on indigenous oral traditions and languages. Presented by the California Indian Storytelling Association and Agua Caliente Cultural Museum, this incredible experience of Native cultural  includes a special evening event — Story as Song.  

This Festival is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Alliance for California Traditional Arts, in partnership with the Walter and Elise Haas Fund, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the James Irvine Foundation.
